Maker Raft Race Triumph!

Well, our boat was almost too good – one of our Makers in Residence, Ross Andrews, used the Shopbot to cleverly recreate a punt originally designed in the 1940s. After a week of sleepless nights piecing the craft together with the help of Mark, he emerged on Saturday morning covered in sawdust and epoxy, punting down the canal from Machines Room to Angel.

It was a beautiful sight as the Machines Room punt glided past all the other contestants in the first heat. Unfortunately those pesky pirates from Makerversity got in our way going round a buoy in the second heat and completely trounced us with their amazing canoe made from 4 huge tractor inner tubes. But we were still awarded the Best Craftmanship trophy which we happily accepted.

Here’s the full list of participants and winners:

The Carpentry Club – Best Pirates

Makerversity – Fastest Craft

Blackhorse Workshop – Best Sink

Institute of Making – Most Innovative Design and Best Flag

Machines Room – Best Craftsmanship

Islington Boat Club Youth Group – Best Team

Islington Boat Club Upper Deckers – Best Personality

Our hosts, Islington Boat Club were totally amazing, and their youth team had built a fantastic raft. Thanks to all at IBC and also to Ollie from Carpentry Club for a wonderful day. We’re already planning our entry for next year…
