This week Clear Village trustee Alice Holmberg has taken up a design residency in Nicosia, Cyprus.
We are excited to be partnering with Sidestreets in Nicosia and the Faculty of Architecture of Siegen University, Germany to conduct an urban case study in the old town of Nicosia.
This residency is aimed at developing a new approach to the rehabilitation and social transformation of the old town. We begin with one of the most challenging sites in Nicosia, Ay Yıldız. This area is densely populated and has a high number of unintegrated immigrants from the Turkish mainland.
The very condensed week will be composed of meeting the community out in the old town, observations and documentation of the site, evening lectures and general emerging into and getting an understanding of Cypriot culture.
Alongside great public space and architect minds, Alice will be holding lectures and tutor throughout the week, representing the other partners, the lecturers include:
- Ulrich Exner and Dietrich Pressel, Siegen University
- Anber Onar, Side Streets
- Onur Olguner, Nicosia Light Rail Public Transportation Proposal for Nicosia Master Plan / Project Leader
- A local real estate owner
- Ali Çağlar UNDP Senior Technical Officer
- Layık Topcan, Department of City Planning Office
