INITIATIVE

Helping communities move from marginalisation to revitalisation

Many rural and peri-urban areas are missing the opportunity to find their way into the 21st century and offer their inhabitants an aspirational model of sustainable living. And with half of the world’s population still living in these areas, CLEAR Village believes that more attention needs to be paid to them. Too often, the possibility of retrofitting existing locations has been overlooked and community involvement in the design and planning process has been insufficient.

That is why CLEAR Village and a fine collection of partners in action have come together to develop a new approach to community planning and take a fresh look at possible renaissance at the village scale. Our long-term vision is to achieve a positive contagion whereby more and more communities are able to rediscover their potential and serve as radiant beacons of sustainability for places much in need of alternatives.

Our goals are to

+ Bring together global experts and community stakeholders to develop and share ways to implement radical change in marginalised locations

+ Co-design a replicable planning strategy through successive CLEAR Village labs to create new solutions to reboot rural and peri-urban areas

+ By 2015, redevelop a place to become a real-life CLEAR Village in close and constant collaboration with the host community, thereby setting standards for others to follow

So CLEAR Village is all about…

Road Map

The illustration below represents some of the milestones of the CLEAR Village initiative and shows how the different activities of the Foundation overlap to channel the implementation of the design process into a place that people want to live in and visit, an experience which can then be transferred to other places.
